    Human Rights Campaign

    The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has been fighting for the civil rights of LGBT individuals since 1980. With so much experience under their belt, it’s no surprise that they’ve got a goldmine of information meant to assist those among the LGBT family in purchasing a home. Their state information page even has interactive maps that will show you the housing laws geared towards LGBT in specific states.

    The property ownership page at HRC also has tons of resources, tips and information on how to buy your home. This includes tips on estate planning, mortgage tax deductions, adding partners to a title and much more. The Human Rights Campaign is undoubtedly one of the best resources for LGBT homebuyers.

    Lambda Legal 

    While it’s impressive that HRC has been around since 1980, Lambda Legal has been fighting the good fight since 1971. If you face housing discrimination based on your sexual orientation or gender identity, they’re the group to turn to for legal assistance. Luckily, they also have resources to help before it comes to that point.

    While many of the tools offered by Lambda Legal are similar to HRC’s offerings, their In Your State page provides information unrelated to real estate but still important to LGBT homebuyers. This includes which states have legal protections in place for public accommodations and the workplace.

    Knowing all the resources at your disposal is certainly beneficial, but the easiest way to avoid housing discrimination is simply finding a LGBT-friendly real estate agent. The National Association of Gay & Lesbian Real Estate Professionals is a great starting point. Here you can find real estate agents who know your local laws and can work the system in your favor.

    As part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity cannot dictate state laws on LGBT discrimination. It can, however, provide a wealth of information on states that do and do not discriminate.

    Additionally, the department focuses on helping LGBTQ individuals who have been discriminated against even in states where it’s perfectly legal. While you may not think you have legal recourse in these states, the Fair Housing Act may still come into play if a housing denial was based on gender stereotype nonconformity.

    Overcoming LGBT Homebuyer Hurdles
