Labor Day Denver: Ten Things to Do in Denver this Labor Day

Labor Day Weekend is almost upon us! The Rocky Mountain State has no shortage of amazing things to do this weekend as the summer starts to dissolve into the fall. So, what places should you be looking to go out to this Labor Day Weekend in Colorado? Here’s our guide to the events you should be heading out to this weekend!

    Denver: The Taste of Colorado

What could be better for a labor day weekend than a sampling of the best food in Colorado – accompanied by some of the world’s biggest stages? This free event in the heart of Downtown Denver (you’ll have to pay for the food and drink tickets, though) offers a massive array of the state’s best cuisine. Diners can sample everything from tacos and barbecue to doughnuts and sushi at this engaging, entertaining three-day event. Along with the food, there’s a kid-friendly area for children to play, plenty of merchandisers, and lots of excellent music. Artists, as varied as Grand Funk Railroad, Dwight Yoakam, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and Scott Stapp, are performing for festival-goers.

    Greeley: Friday Fest

Head out to the Final “Friday Fest” of 2019 in downtown Greeley to enjoy some tunes, some drinks, and some excellent food. From 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM, Greely’s 9th Street Plaza hosts a special music performance accompanied by everything from fire spinners to street performers. Greeley is also home to a unique “Go Cup” service. During these hours, Friday Fest attendees can stroll into the excellent Greeley bars and restaurants and go out with a drink in their “Go Cups.” Look out for some of the unique Colorado beers to have during the Friday Fest, including favorites from the local Weldworks, Wiley Roots, and Brix breweries.

    Fort Collins: Tour de Fat

One of the points of pride of Fort Collins – the internationally-renowned New Belgium brewery – puts on its annual “Tour de Fat” on Saturday, August 31. This unique celebration of the bicycle and beer is a very Colorado take on the “Tour de France.” A charity benefit for local bicycle non-profits, the Tour de Fat is a colorful parade of bikes, entertainers, and music. Of course, there’s plenty of New Belgium beer to go along with the “Tour.” Head to the New Belgium Brewing headquarters on Linden Street in Fort Collins to enjoy some of the brewery’s signature Fat Tire beer and plenty of funky, entertaining live music. When you’re in the brewery, don’t forget to try some of New Belgium’s other favorites, like the Citradelic Tangerine IPA, the Dayblazer Easy Going Ale, and the Glutiny Pale Ale.

Colorado Springs: Labor Day Lift Off

Up, up, and away, in your fabulous balloon! The famous Colorado Springs “Labor Day Lift Off” is back for another year of fun and spectacle on in the heart of Colorado Springs. A local institution and state-wide favorite for over four decades, the Labor Day Lift Off celebrates one of the most colorful parts of aviation with a remarkable hot air balloon show every day from August 31-September 2. Get there early in the morning and watch as 70 beautiful hot air balloons take off against the Rocky Mountain sky. Then, in the evening, the same skies are lit up with their “burners,” creating a remarkable scene against the dusk sky. If you’re interested, you can even book a flight on one of these hot air balloons!

The balloons are only a small portion of the festival. There are live performances from renowned musical acts, along with plenty of food and merchandise for attendees. One of the coolest parts of the Lift Off? The Dunkin’ Donuts “Donut Eating Championship,” which is open to both kids and adults. Get your carbohydrate fix in and see if you can become the Donut-eating champion! Other events at the Lift Off include a camera balloon photography contest, skydivers, and sunrise yoga for attendees (that would make for an interesting pair with the donut-eating contest).

    Aurora: Brewery Tour

The lovely suburb of Aurora is home to some of the greatest breweries in the Denver area. Labor Day weekend is the perfect excuse to take a trip through the best of them! Start at the Ursula Brewery to try some of their fascinating brews – like the “Crustless,” a peanut butter and jelly porter, or the “Covalent” Double IPA. After that, blast off to Launch Pad Brewing. This super-cool rocket-themed brewery offers beers like the Kosmonaut Kolsch, Cuban Missile Crisis espresso cream ale, and Project Apollo single hop pale ale. Another standout on the Aurora brewery scene? Cheluma Brewing Company, in the Stanley Marketplace. It’s one of the best places to go in the city for a meal, some shopping, and some excellent beers. Try the Coco-Xoco porter, Lupita IPA, or Lowrider Mexican lager.

    Arvada: Arvada Farmers Market

The suburb of Arvada is home to one of the nicest, most charming farmers markets in all of Colorado. Stop in the Sunday of Labor Day weekend to peruse some of the city’s best local selections and farm-fresh food at Olde Towne Square at 57th and Olde Wadsworth. It’s an excellent way to spend the last Sunday before fall arrives in full.
